Raiffeisen Bank Albania Signs the Letter of Commitment to Join the United Nations Global Compact
A new step in the Bank’s commitment to a more sustainable and inclusive economy
Raiffeisen Bank Albania today signed the Letter of Commitment to join the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact), placing its commitment to sustainable development on the global platform and further aligning its activities with the principles and objectives of sustainable development.
The Letter of Commitment, signed by Christian Canacaris, CEO of Raiffeisen Bank Albania, makes Raiffeisen Bank Albania part of a global network of more than 25,000 organizations across over 100 countries committed to integrating the principles of responsible business into their strategies and operations. Beyond membership itself, the agreement comes at a time when the role of the private sector in Albania’s sustainable development is becoming increasingly important.
From Commitment to a Global Platform
For Raiffeisen Bank Albania, joining the UN Global Compact represents a further step in a commitment built over many years in the areas of ESG and socialresponsibility.
The Bank has increasingly integrated environmental, social, and governance considerations into the way it conducts its business, linking this approach to sustainable finance, the green economy, and its contribution to the community.
The UN Global Compact gives this commitment an international dimension, placing the Bank within a global community where companies exchange experiences and practices for integrating sustainability into their business activities.
Christian Canacaris, CEO of Raiffeisen Bank Albania, said: “For a bank, sustainability is directly linked to how the economy is financed and to the decisions made every day. Membership in the UN Global Compact provides us with a clear framework to further develop this approach and to learn from the experience of a global business community. This is a commitment that goes beyond a signature. It is part of how we want to continue developing our business and contributing to the Albanian economy and society.”
Ingrid Macdonald, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Albania, said: “To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, meaningful private sector engagement, grounded in responsible and sustainable business practices, is essential. The United Nations Global Compact provides a framework for companies to align their strategies and operations with principles on human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption, and to report on their progress. We encourage more companies to join this global movement and strengthen their contribution to responsible business, innovation and sustainable development.”
A Partnership That Goes Beyond Participation
The UN Global Compact is the United Nations initiative for the private sector, built around 10 Principles relating to human rights, labour standards, theenvironment, and anti-corruption.
Its participants commit to integrating these principles into their strategies and operations and to contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
For Raiffeisen Bank Albania, membership creates opportunities to exchange knowledge and practices with companies from different markets, keep pace with international developments in ESG, and further advance its approach to sustainable development.
In this way, the Letter of Commitment signed today represents more than an institutional commitment. It establishes a new point of reference for how the Bank will continue to advance this agenda in Albania.
Because the way tomorrow’s economy develops also begins with how it is financed and built today.
